In his mythological poem Metamorphoses, Ovid tells how the herb comes from the slavering mouth of Cerberus, the three-headed dog that guarded the gates of Hades. Also, Medea attempted to poison Theseus with a cup of wine poisoned with wolf's bane. In Greek mythology, the goddess Hecate is said to have invented aconite, which Athena used to transform Arachne into a spider. The only post mortem signs are those of asphyxia.Īconite has been understood as a poison from ancient times, and is frequently represented as such in fiction. The main causes of death are ventricular arrhythmias and asystole, or paralysis of the heart or respiratory center. Other features may include sweating, dizziness, difficulty in breathing, headache, and confusion. Cardiovascular features include hypotension, sinus bradycardia, and ventricular arrhythmias. This is followed by a sensation of burning, tingling, and numbness in the mouth and face, and of burning in the abdomen.] In severe poisonings, pronounced motor weakness occurs and cutaneous sensations of tingling and numbness spread to the limbs. The initial signs are gastrointestinal, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Death usually occurs within two to six hours in fatal poisoning (20 to 40 ml of tincture may prove fatal). Marked symptoms may appear almost immediately, usually not later than one hour, and "with large doses death is almost instantaneous". Most species are extremely poisonous and must be dealt with carefully. I love it to see the stars and moon above me, to feel the wind and to be able to search for omens and signs of the spirits and Gods around me during my rites.Aconitum commonly known as aconite, monkshood, wolf's bane, leopard's bane, mousebane, women's bane, devil's helmet, queen of poisons, or blue rocket, is a genus of over 250 species of flowering plants belonging to the family Ranunculaceae. ![]() On dark moon i harvested the first flowers too and offered some to Hekate in the Deipnon.Īt the moment i do all my rites outside in my garden or on the crossroad (the shrine there is still intact and was not damaged anymore). And my wolfsbane is so full of flowers that i had to bind it together- because the flowers were to heavy and brought the plants down. But i have more lemon balm than in “normal years”. This year i have less mints through the dry weather- many sorts of mints didn’t start to grow so far. The summer here in germany was very dry- but most of the plants in my witch garden grow very well. This variety has a more intensive smell- and i look forward to see if it will smell different then the normal wormwood when i use it as incense. ![]() Usually i used just the normal wormwood for incense, oils and tinctures. On the dark moon i harvested my wormwood and created smudge sticks. We will use it for coocking, but for blessed water and for magical stuff, too. I have put them into salt and after a month i grinded it and so i got a very good smelling selfmade rose-salt. Last month on a friday after the new moon i walked for hours through the fields and forests and collected flowers of wild roses (in germay we call these dog-rose). ![]() It was very tasty but we used it quite much for coocking and magical stuff- so it was empty soon. Last year a good friend (who is a witch, too) gave me rose-salt as birthday present.
